6 Essential Commands to Teach Your New Puppy: A Step-by-Step Guide

Teaching your new puppy basic commands is an important step in building a strong bond and establishing good behavior. Here are some essential commands to teach your puppy:

"Sit": This is one of the easiest and most basic commands to teach your puppy. Hold a treat in front of your puppy's nose and slowly move it up and over their head. As they follow the treat, they will naturally sit down. Say "sit" as they sit and immediately reward them with the treat.

"Stay": Teach your puppy to stay by asking them to sit, then holding up your hand and saying "stay." Slowly move away from your puppy, then return and give them a treat and praise for staying. Gradually increase the distance and the time you ask your puppy to stay.

"Come": Call your puppy's name and use a happy, encouraging tone. When they come to you, reward them with treats and praise.

"Heel": Teach your puppy to heel by walking and giving the command "heel." When your puppy is walking nicely next to you, reward them with treats and praise. If they pull away, stop and stand still until they come back to your side.

"Leave it": Teach your puppy to "leave it" by placing a treat on the ground and covering it with your hand. Say "leave it" and keep your hand over the treat. When your puppy stops trying to get the treat, reward them with a treat from your other hand.

"Drop it": Teach your puppy to "drop it" by giving them a treat, then using the command "drop it." When they drop the treat, reward them with another treat.

Remember, consistency is key when teaching your puppy new commands. Practice each command several times a day and be patient and persistent. Reward your puppy for good behavior and try to make training sessions fun and enjoyable for both you and your puppy.
